Rivalry Week (College Football Week 14 Preview)

Ryan: 565-175

Matt: 549-191

Purdue at Indiana

Matt: The Old Oaken Bucket Game. A game that I as an Indiana fan look forward to very much every year. When I first started as a student at Indiana University, this game wasn’t a game that took place the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It was a game that took place the first Saturday after that Saturday. When all the students were back from Thanksgiving break, and ever since they moved it to this game to the Saturday after Thanksgiving, I feel like it has lost a bit of it’s intensity. However, it is still a rivalry game and I’m sure both teams have this game circled. Both Purdue and Indiana have had seasons that they are looking forward to erasing, but I think Indiana’s season has a bit of a better overall look, looking back at it. Beating Penn State for the first time, and being a lot more competitive than in the past few years. However, there is no reason this team shouldn’t be bowl eligible and the one reason they aren’t is the defense. I’m really looking forward this game, and sure Purdue fans will tell you that they have the edge in this series, but in this game I think the Hoosiers have the edge and bring the Old Oaken Bucket back to where it belongs: Bloomington, Indiana
Winner: Indiana

Ryan: Though college football is coming to an end, I’m sure it’s one that these two teams are looking forward to. Both Purdue and Indiana have had terrible seasons and no post season play on the horizon. The last game is going to be the biggest of the year: The Old Oaken Bucket Game. Normally, there is a clear favorite to win it. This year, that is not the case. Both teams have shown that they cannot compete with the top tier in the Big Ten, getting destroyed by Ohio State and Wisconsin. Danny Ettling showed some improvement against Illinois, but he has a long way to go. The Hoosiers get Purdue at home this year, and I look for them to try and grab momentum early, airing it out with Nate Sudfeld.  In all but one of the Hoosiers offense, Sudfeld has failed to throw for over 250 yards. If the Hoosiers can’t get the passing game going, I see the Boilers being able to win it. Purdue has shown up for one game this year when Notre Dame came to town. If Purdue can bring the same intensity to Bloomington, they might just be able to take home the Bucket, which they have won two straight and 68 percent of the time. With that said, Boilers cap off their terrible season with a little white light.
Winner: Purdue

Minnesota at Michigan State

Matt: Michigan State is coming off another win against Northwestern, and they punched their ticket to the Big Ten title game as the representative for the Legends division. The Spartans have really had such a successful season because of their defense. One of the best defenses in the nation. Michigan State finishes their season against the Golden Gophers, another surprise team in the Big Ten. I think the Spartans finish strong and finish their season undeafted in the Big Ten and heading into Indianapolis hoping to pull off the upset and find themselves in a BCS bowl, perhaps, with a lot of luck and loses by other teams, the National Championship.
Winner: Michigan State

Ryan: Michigan State is kicking themselves for losing to Notre Dame earlier in the season. The Spartans are 10-1 and ranked thirteenth in the nation. If Michigan State hadn’t struggled at Notre Dame, a game in which they lost by four, then maybe they would have hopes of their own national title. However, Michigan State has put together a great year, one that will find them in the Big Ten Championship game against Ohio State. Not looking forward, the Spartans play a Minnesota team that has a lot to play for. The Gophers have embraced their coach and now with the ongoing seizure situation, have rallied to make this year mean something. Minnesota has flirted with the rankings, but after a loss to Wisconsin, they might just fall right out of it. The Spartans have relied heavily on defense this year, only allowing 12.5 points a game. Mix the Michigan State defense with a Minnesota offense that has only scored over twenty points three times in Big Ten play and you get a great matchup for Michigan State.
Winner: Michigan State

Ohio State at Michigan

Matt: At the beginning of the season, this game was going to be the one game that I thought Ohio State might have trouble winning, but after Michigan disappointing season, and Ohio State being undeafted and being dominate over just about every team they faced, it’s hard to see a way that Ohio State doesn’t win this. The one stat that does play a factor in this game is that Michigan has only lost once at home under Brady Hoke. However, this isn’t a game that I think the home advantage is going to be enough to overpower the Buckeyes. Braxton Miller and Carlos Hyde are running on all cylinders right now and if they want to find themselves in the National Championship game they’ll have to beat their old rivals and do it with some style. I think the Buckeyes will just do that and keep my hopes of predicting the National Champion alive.
Winner: Ohio State

Ryan: Michigan has been a huge disappoint this year, just not to me. At the beginning of the year, I was not sure what all the hype was about, and now I think just about everyone in the nation is with me. The Wolverines have lost four of their last six games, one of which was Brady Hoke’s first home loss against Nebraska. If that alone wasn’t enough, this week they host the number three team in the nation and their bitter rivals: Ohio State. The Buckeyes are coming into this game with a staggering 23 game winning streak. Ohio State has bigger fish to fry this year with the Big Ten Championship game against Michigan State and a possible National Title game, but they will make sure to punish the hated Wolverines. Braxton Miller exited Heisman talk when he got injured earlier in the season, but he hasn’t skipped a beat since his return. Ohio State ranks in the top ten in scoring offense and defense, which makes them a tough team to prepare for. Seeing is how Michigan has a terrible coach and team, that switches to an impossibility. The question at the beginning of the year was about Devin Gardner’s accuracy, which is answered with a big red “X.” Gardner is completing less than 60 percent of his passes and has thrown eleven interceptions. Ohio State is going to have a field day in Ann Arbor.
Winner: Ohio State

Alabama at Auburn

Matt: I am so excited about this game. It’s probably the biggest game of the year. It’ll not only determine who will be going to the SEC Championship game, but it could determine who find a spot in the National Championship game. Auburn is definetly the comeback team and the surpise team of this year. Going from 3-9 and not winning a single SEC game to going 10-1 and only losing to LSU thus far in the SEC. This game is going to be so intense, I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle it. Auburn’s offense is dynamic, Alabama’s defense is powerful. This game I think could go either way. I’m going to go with  Auburn though because Alabama’s ego and lack of tough opponents in recent weeks will come back to haunt them and Auburn will find themselves with much to celebrate at the end of the night.
Winner: Auburn

Ryan: An Iron Bowl has never meant this much since, well, never. This is the first time the Iron Bowl will decide who goes into the SEC Championship Game from the West. This game also has National Championship implications for both teams. Alabama has been the steady number one all year, but Auburn has put together a great season of their own. As if this game needed any more hype. Both teams put up thirty points a game, but the Crimson Tide once again have a stout defense, allowing less than ten points a game. Auburn is lucky to be here today, scraping by against Washington State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and last week against Georgia. The Tigers winning margin in those games was a combined twenty-eight points. Alabama hasn’t won a game by less than ten except for the shootout against the Aggies. With all on the line this week, I look for Nick Saban to have the Crimson Tide on lockdown and ready to go. Saban has always prepared his teams for big games, and that is something Auburn will lack with a first year head coach. All the signs point to Alabama once again winning the West, and that’s where I am going as well.
Winner: Alabama

Clemson at South Carolina

Matt: A cross conference rivalry that I feel like in recent years a bit lopsided toward South Carolina, because South Carolina has been a powerhouse in football for quite some time while Clemson is just now coming into the spotlight. Both of these teams have had a bit of disappointing season, with national championship hopes in their eyes and now they need help from a lot of different teams if either of them wants to find themselves in the National Championship game. South Carolina’s big thing coming into the season was Jadeveon Clowney. With everyone picking him as the preseason Heismen winner, but he hasn’t really shown up this year. One could even argue that he hasn’t been the best defense player this year, let alone the player of the year. Regardless, this should be a pretty decent rivalry game but in the end I think that Clemson comes out on top on this one and in the hunt for a BCS bowl.
Winner: Clemson

Ryan: Clemson was a preseason top five team with all the aspirations in the world. One visit from the Seminoles changed all that. After getting blown out against Florida State, the Tigers lost all shot at a National Title. Now, the Tigers have to hope for an at-large BCS bid. Don’t get too ahead of yourselves Clemson. South Carolina is looking to finish the season with a huge rivalry win. Aside from losing to Georgia and a terrible loss to Tennessee, the Gamecocks have mustered out nine wins and looking to make it double digits. Connor Shaw has been the face of this team, throwing for almost 2000 yards and twenty touchdowns and only one interception. Shaw has also rushed for over 400 yards with four touchdowns. However, Shaw isn’t the only quarterback playing in this game. Tajh Boyd has over 3000 yards passing for the third straight season with 37 combined touchdowns. Boyd has always been a stat quarterback while at Clemson but was never able to win the big game. With one last game at Clemson, Boyd will look to put the team on his back against South Carolina. A big storyline coming into the season was how amazing Jadeveon Clowney was. Clowney was a man among boys, the most NFL ready player in college football, hands down the best player in the game. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Clowney has looked pedestrian at best this year, looking like he isn’t giving any effort. With only two sacks and less than fifty tackles this year, Clowney has disappointed. With Boyd wanting to leave on a high note and Clowney underperforming, I see Clemson with a great season finale.
Winner: Clemson

Notre Dame at Stanford

Matt: Stanford comes off a knockout victory over California but the loss against USC is still on their mind and I’m sure still hurting a bit. This was a Stanford team that was suppose to finally break through and find themselves in the National Championship game, and now they had to get help from Oregon (which they did) to find themselves in the Pac 12 title game. Stanford’s season, like a lot of the one lose teams, has been a bit of a disappointment. Now they welcome the Fightin’ Irish into their stadium in a rivalry game. I know I’ve been hard on Notre Dame all year, but they have fallen, but are still able to be ranked heading into their last game of the season. Now they have their toughest test of the year against Stanford and I just don’t see them pulling it off, Stanford is not going to let themselves slip against and lose a game that they should win. Stanford wins this one.
Winner: Stanford

Ryan: Earlier in the year, I predicted this game to decide who plays Alabama in the National Title game. Now, both teams are fighting for a decent bowl game, maybe a BCS game. Stanford clinched the Pac-12 North with Oregon losing to Arizona on Saturday. Even with the championship game spot, the Cardinal will want to finish strong against rival Notre Dame. The Irish have performed well this season, losing only to ranked Michigan and Oklahoma, and an upset against Pittsburgh. Notre Dame seemed to be hitting on all cylinders until they lost to the Panthers. Last week against BYU, Notre Dame sprung out to an early lead but faltered late, allowing BYU a chance to win. Stanford’s two losses came to Utah and USC, both teams unranked. Both teams have tailored their games knowing that the defenses are strong. Both defenses allow less than 23 points a game. Notre Dame lost a key part of their defense when Louis Nix had season ending surgery. In his absence, Stephon Tuitt has stepped up to the plate as the leader on the line. The big key for this game will be who can make the big play that sets the tone for the entire game. The Irish have a few big play guys in TJ Jones, George Atkinson III, and now Tarean Folston, who looks to be the running back of the future. Notre Dame does what it takes to win in Palo Alto.
Winner: Notre Dame

Texas A&M at Missouri

Matt: At the beginning of the year it was all about Johnny Football. Weather he could take his talents and will his team to the National Championship. However, it seems that dream is no longer possible and he’ll end his college career (my prediction, he hates being in College Station, and doesn’t want to spend another minute there) by hoping to find him and his team in a high end bowl game. That, however, will be a tough test considering the Aggies have to face Missouri. A game that at the beginning of the season, they didn’t think would be a tough test. This is going to be an interesting game, and Missouri is looking to punch a ticket to its first ever SEC title game after only joining the SEC last year. I think that is motivation enough for the Tigers to get past Johnny Football and find themselves in the SEC Title game, and maybe even the National Championship game.
Winner: Missouri

Ryan: Texas A&M has done everything to make itself meaningless in the SEC this year. The Aggies have lost three games in SEC play so far this year and may make that four this week against Missouri. Johnny Manziel has put up more impressive numbers this year, but has not come through when it matters. Though Manziel matched Alabama down the stretch, early interceptions cost him that game. With the game on the line against Auburn, ole Johnny Football couldn’t make a play. Last week against LSU, Manziel just looked awful. This week, the Aggies play a Missouri team with one of the best defensive lines in the game today. Missouri has come out of nowhere this year with ten wins and a chance to play in the SEC championship game. Missouri is in control of its fate. A win and they are in, a loss and they are not. It all looked like it was over for the Tigers when starting quarterback James was out for four games, but the Tigers held on to win three of the four. Missouri and Texas A&M both know how to score points, but the difference is on the defensive side of the ball. The Aggies have struggled all year, allowing over thirty points per game whereas the Tigers only allow nineteen. With the SEC on the line, I like Missouri to win.
Winner: Missouri

New Mexico at Boise State

Matt: I’m not going to say too much about this game, but I will say this. I’m thinking that Ryan is really excited that college basketball has started and he can put the Lobo’s football season behind him. A great rushing team, but that hasn’t been enough for the Lobos this year and they finish the season against a decent team in Boise State. Boise State shouldn’t have too much trouble with the Lobos. Boise State wins.
Winner: Boise State

Ryan: New Mexico has had a sad year. The Lobos entered the season hoping for a bowl game but have only won three games so far. Man factors have played into the Lobo’s upsetting season: no passing game, no defense, and no big playmakers. Kasey Carrier has struggled this year and will miss the final game with a concussion. Boise State isn’t having one of their Cinderella stories either. The Broncos are 7-4 and need a loss from Utah State in order to go to the Mountain West Championship. The Broncos are missing Kellen Moore this year, having to go between two quarterbacks, never finding one that sticks. New Mexico has also used two quarterbacks, but neither of which can throw the ball. This game looks to be a sloppy one with no defense and a lot of running.
Winner: Boise State

The BCS picture becomes a bit clearer (College Football Week 12 preview)

Matt: 467-162 (.742)
Ryan: 475-154 (.755)

Indiana at Wisconsin, Saturday Noon, ESPN2

Matt: The Hoosiers finally snap their losing streak with a win against Illinois last week. Nate Sudfield threw for 267 and three touchdowns while Coleman rushed for 215 yards and 2 touchdowns. Houston added on another 150 yards and 2 touchdowns to give Indiana a total of 650 total yards. However, they now head to Madison to take on the Badgers of Wisconsin. Indiana hasn’t won against Wisconsin since 2002 and that was only by a field goal, since then Wisconsin has won by an average of 40 points. This is definitely a game, as a Hoosier fan, I never look forward to. Just like in basketball, Indiana can’t seem to beat the Badgers. I know I said I’d never pick against my Hoosiers, but I’m not completely stupid and I need to bridge this gap that Ryan has on me. Wisconsin unfortunately destroys us again.
Winner: Wisconsin

Ryan: Indiana is a team that was looking to take the program to the next step by making a bowl game. They looked to be on the right track before a three game skid put them in a hole that required three wins in four games. After beating Illinois last week, the Hoosiers still need two more with a difficult schedule. Next three up are two straight road games at ranked Wisconsin and Ohio State followed by the always difficult Oaken Bucket game against Purdue. Eyes on the prize, the Hoosiers get ready for a tough Wisconsin team in a hostile environment. Wisconsin is a much underrated team still being punished for a bad refereed game in Phoenix. The Badgers defense has only allowed opponents 15.2 points a game while having the tenth best rushing offense. The Hoosiers have not been able to stop run heavy teams this year, allowing over 200 yards rushing in every loss. A loss here pretty much means no bowl game for the Hoosiers, and that is what will happen. Wisconsin wins by double digits.
Winner: Wisconsin

Purdue at Penn State, Saturday Noon, BTN

Matt: Purdue’s season is over, and they are heading the same way that Kevin Wilson started his career at Indiana, with only having a win against a FCS team. However, I think this team just may be worst. Purdue has one of the worst scoring offenses in the nation at 122nd out of 125. Only averaging 11.8 points a game. I’m not going to tred lightly here, they aren’t going to win this game. Penn State may not be the powerhouse they once were, but they still are better than this Purdue squad. I think most Purdue fans have already shifted to basketball mode. Penn State wins in this one.
Winner: Penn State

Ryan: Purdue has had a terrible season in the aftermath of Danny Hope-less. Darrel Hazel has put in the time and effort to turn this team around, but the pieces are not all there. Danny Etling hasn’t shown as much production as all the hype would have suggested. Etling is only has a 48 percent completion rate and four touchdowns compared to five interceptions. Penn State has had a decent year with a 5-3 record. The Nittany Lions are still dealing with the sanctions from the Jerry Sandusky episode which is making it difficult to recruit and keep players. Coach O’Brien is determined to get Penn State back to its previous dominance. Though the Nittany Lions don’t score many points and the defense isn’t stout, the Boilermakers rank in the 120s in both scoring offense and defense. In a sloppy game, I have Penn State coming out on top.
Winner: Penn State

Georgia at Auburn, 3:30 PM Saturday, CBS

Matt: This game is huge, not only in the SEC, but in the national picture as well. Auburn has definitely been a surprise this year. I don’t think they were on a lot of people’s radar once the season started but they totally are there now. Their last two games are completely huge. This one against a Georgia squad with three loses still hoping to find themselves in a BCS game, and a matchup against the number one team in the nation next week at home. If Auburn wants a chance at not only the SEC title game, but possibly a shot at the national championship, they’ll have to start by knocking off the Bulldogs. Auburn gets it done by passing, with the 3rd passing offense in the nation, and a very good defense as well. Georgia on the other hand, has a much more balanced offense with an emphasis on the run. Georgia has an average pass defense, while Auburn has a pretty decent rushing defense. I think it’ll come down to the defenses in this game and in the end I think Auburn takes this game and welcomes the Crimson Tide next week in one of the biggest matchups of the year, if not the biggest.
Winner: Auburn

Ryan: Gus Malzahn has turned around an Auburn team in just his first year. Last year, the Tigers were 3-9 and last in the SEC with an 0-8 conference record. This year, the Tigers are 9-1 and control their destiny in the SEC if they win out. Georgia, who was my pick to win the SEC, has struggled with injury problems. The Bulldogs played close games against Clemson, Missouri, and Vanderbilt, losing by single digits in two of them. Quarterback Aaron Murray hasn’t played as well as he’d hoped, going down in all statistics compared to last year. Auburn is led by running back Tre Mason who has over 1000 yards and 16 touchdowns on the season. The Auburn offense is also putting up staggering numbers, scoring 38 points a game. A win here by the Tigers and two by Alabama, which should be easy, would set up a huge Iron Bowl. As nice as it all sounds, and as great as that game would be, I am still not convinced on the Tigers. Aaron Murray pulls off the upset.
Winner: Georgia

Texas Tech at Baylor, 7:00 PM Saturday, FOX

Matt: Baylor is in control of their own destiny the rest of the season. If they can win out, they have a strong argument for making the National Championship. However, that road to an undeafted season isn’t easy. It is made easier by the fact that the Big 12 doesn’t have a championship game, but Baylor still has this game, road games at TCU and Oklahoma State and their rivals Texas at home, so their road to the national championship is anything but easy. That road begins with a Red Raiders squad that until three weeks ago was looking like a national championship contender as well. But after three loses, the Red Raiders have slipped from the rankings and are now looking to salvage their great start by having a strong finish by playing two tough Texas teams in Baylor and Texas. Tech still leads the nation in passing yards with 408.2, but they face a Baylor team that is 3rd in passing offense, 9th in rushing offense, and 9th in total defense. Those numbers are crazy. I don’t think the Red Raiders have that kind of power in them and unfortunately, their lose streak continues in Waco with the Bears winning.
Winner: Baylor

Ryan: Baylor has started the season off 8-0 and is coming off a blowout win against Oklahoma. The Bears, led behind Quarterback Bryce Petty and running back Lache Seastrunk, have put up more points than anyone in college football with 61 a game. The defense is also ranked seventh, allowing less than 16 a game. Seastrunk has gone over 100 yards in six games this year with 11 touchdowns. Petty is leading an efficient passing attack with two or more touchdowns every game and over 300 yards passing in seven. Baylor is fortunate to only play four road games total this year, which always makes it easier on a team. Texas Tech also started the year off strong, winning its first seven games by a touchdown or more in each. Since the great start, the Red Raiders have lost the last three games by a combined 53 points. Looking at this upcoming game, it looks to become four straight. Texas Tech has the number one pass offense behind its duo at quarterback, but the team hasn’t shown much at all against good teams. Baylor will win this easily.
Winner: Baylor

Oklahoma State at Texas, 3:30 Saturday, FOX

Matt: My prediction for Texas winning the Big 12 was looking a little shaky at the beginning of the season after the Longhorns lost to BYU and Ole Miss by a lot. However, that predictions looks a lot better now. The Longhorns are on top of the standings in the Big 12 being undeafted in the conference and now have a very tough test against Oklahoma State before facing Baylor next week in what could be essentially a Big 12 championship game. Oklahoma State is going to try everything in their power to make sure that they still have a shot at the Big 12 title though and come out with everything they have because they also have a tough finish to the season with Texas, Baylor, and Oklahoma. In the end though, I think that Texas is looking very hot right and comes out on top.
Winner: Texas

Ryan: Before the season, Mack Brown was on the hot seat. After starting the season off at 1-2, that seat became even hotter. Since then, Brown has lead his twenty-fourth ranked Longhorns to six straight wins and a 6-0 record in the Big 12. Texas has a pretty average team but has found ways to win. Quarterback Case McCoy has taken over for David Ash and hasn’t done too terrible, although he has thrown six interceptions in the past four games. Oklahoma State has won its games on a balanced attack. The Cowboys have two quarterbacks with over 1000 yards passing and nine touchdowns as well as two running backs with ten and nine touchdowns. The defense has also been strong, allowing less than 20 points a game. This game has major Big 12 implications. Texas and Baylor, who play last game of the year, are both undefeated, Oklahoma State has one conference loss, and Oklahoma has two. The Cowboys play Baylor and Oklahoma to end the season. So, a win here against Texas could open the door for all four teams to win the conference. I like Oklahoma State to open Pandora’s Box.
Winner: Oklahoma State

Upset Weekend (College Football Preview Week 11)

Matt: Well, another week in the books and another disappointing loss by my Hoosiers. But, I’m going to put it behind me and look forward to this week’s matchup, one where we are actually a favor! I was unable to bridge the gap that Ryan has created in our picks and he continues to have a 11 game lead on me after we tied this week. Ryan is now 436-140 (.757) while I am 425-151 (.738). A lot of exciting games this week, including two Thursday games with national title implications. Got seven matchups to bring you this week, so enjoy.
Oklahoma at Baylor, Thursday 7:30 PM, FOX Sports 1
Matt: This game is huge, it not only has Big 12 conference title implications, but it also has national championship implications. Baylor is playing lights out this season and is one of the surprise teams of the year. Just like Michigan State, another surprise this year, the Bears are doing it with a great defense. Baylor’s defense is in the top 10 in both rushing and passing. If that wasn’t enough, Baylor’s offense is a powerhouse as well, leading the nation in passing yards at 417.3 yards per game and 7th in the nation in rushing at 301.1 yards per game. On the other side of the ball is Oklahoma, who’s numbers aren’t as impressive but handed the Red Raiders a lost and only loss came at the hands of the Longhorns. This is the first of three games Baylor has to play in a row against ranked teams in the Big 12, after this, they’ll take on Texas Tech followed by Oklahoma State. So, if the Bears want to find themselves in talks for the national championship game, they’ll have to start this tough three weeks off with a win, and I think they will with their balanced offense and great defense.
Winner: Baylor
Ryan Winner: Oklahoma
Oregon at Stanford, Thursday 9:00 PM, ESPN
Matt: Another huge game on Thursday evening, and another game that has not only conference implications, but national championship implications as well. If Oregon wants to find themselves back in the National Championship game, they’ll have to win this one, because after this one, their only other test is Oregon State. And even that one isn’t nearly as intense as this week’s matchup against the Cardinal or two week’s ago matchup against UCLA. Marcus Mariota is still looking like a Heismen front runner, and through 11 weeks, he still hasn’t throw an interception. However, he now has to march into enemy territory and go against the tough Cardinal defense. The Cardinal had a tough test against Oregon State two weeks ago, but the Ducks are a whole another beast. Oregon is second in the nation in scoring offense with 55.6 points per game. If Stanford is going to hand Oregon their first loss, they’ll have to do it by stopping this powerful offense. Unfortunately, I don’t think that is going to happen and Oregon goes on to win this one, perhaps a lot easier than expected.
Winner:
Oregon
Ryan Winner: Oregon
Air Force at New Mexico, Friday 9:00 PM, ESPNU
Matt: Well, for the first time this year, New Mexico is actually playing on national television. This one is I’m sure interesting for Ryan, seeing as how he is employed by the Air Force but is also a huge New Mexico fan, and will be a student there eventually. Last week, Air Force crushed Army by outscoring Army in every quarter expect the first. Anthony LaCoste destroyed the Army defense by rushing for 263 yards and 3 touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, New Mexico had a close loss to an average San Diego State team to fall to 2-6 on the year. New Mexico has one of the worst rushing defense in the nation at 122nd in the nation, out of 125. However, Air Force isn’t much better in rushing defense at 113th in the nation. This one is going to be a very close game, and both teams are going to look to rush the ball a lot. Ultimately, I think it comes down to home field advantage, so I’m going with the Lobos on this one.
Winner: New Mexico
Ryan Winner: New Mexico
Illinois at Indiana, Saturday 3:30 PM, BTN
Matt: I don’t know where to start with my Hoosiers. Last week’s loss was completely heartbreaking. Now it is a very hard road to find my Hoosiers in the post season, but this game right here is a great way to start that. Illinois hasn’t won a Big Ten game since 2011, unfortunately it was against my Hoosiers, but that was a completely different team back in 2011. Both of these teams are pretty evenly matched in terms of numbers, but the biggest difference in my eye is Indiana’s big play potential. Ultimately, I think that is going to be the decisive factor in this game. I currently live in Champaign, and I am tired of seeing orange and blue everywhere I go. Not only do I want my Hoosiers to win this game because it is my alma mater, but I want them to win so I can proudly wear my Indiana gear on Monday to work just to rub it in a little more. I think that the Hoosiers pull this one off, and go to Madison next week with some real confidence after two disappointing weeks.
Winner: Indiana
Ryan Winner: Indiana
Notre Dame at Pittsburgh, Saturday 8:00 PM, ABC
Matt: While most of the nation will be watching the Alabama-LSU game, this game will be on as well. Look, maybe I’ve been a bit harsh on Notre Dame this year. Their win over Michigan State earlier in the year is starting to look really good as the Spartans climb in the ratings and are on top of their division in the Big Ten. Now Notre Dame travels to the Steel City to take on the Panthers of Pittsburgh. The Panthers? Not so good this year, ranking 104th in rushing yards per game at 122.5 and 70th in passing yards at 223.4. Their defense isn’t that great either. I don’t expect Notre Dame to have too many problems with Pittsburgh, but you never know. I think Notre Dame wins this one easily.
Winner: Notre Dame
Ryan Winner: Notre Dame
Iowa at Purdue, Saturday Noon, BTN
Matt: I think I was completely right in saying last week that Purdue’s matchup against Ohio State was going to be one that they and their fan base wanted to forget. Braxton Miller was completely dominate the first half and even after he was pulled the Boilermakers couldn’t do much damage to the Buckeyes. Purdue has a much easier task in front of them with Iowa, but it is still no cake walk. This isn’t the Iowa team of past, but it is still a Iowa football team that was three points away from beating now undeafted Northern Illinois, an Iowa team that for a bit gave both Wisconsin and Ohio State a run for their money. Two black and yellow teams face off at Ross Aid stadium, but only one is going to come out with a  W. I think this is going to be an easy win for Iowa, maybe not as bad as a blowout as last week’s thrashing by Ohio State, but still a one sided game.
Winner: Iowa
Ryan Winner: Iowa
LSU at Alabama, Saturday 8:00 PM, CBS
Matt: Ah, the crème de la crème of college football in Week 11. This game is probably the biggest game of the year. It has so many implications; I’m not even sure where to start. Alabama gets their fist test since, honestly, probably Texas A&M, and even in that game it didn’t seem to be much of a fight. This game is going to be great. Alabama’s tough defense going against LSU’s powerful balanced offense. However, this isn’t the same LSU team that was able to knock Alabama off in the regular season, only to lose to them in the National Championship. And this isn’t the same Alabama team that allowed LSU to beat them in the regular season before beating them in the National Championship. Alabama is much better than that team, and LSU is not as good as that team. I think that for all the hype this game is getting, it’ll be a little less exciting than hoped. I think Alabama’s defense and balanced offense is going to be too much for LSU, especially since the Crimson Tide are playing at home. This one goes to Alabama. Roll tide.
Winner: Alabama
